Studio Prep: The 24-Hour Checklist Before You Hit Record

A great session starts before you walk through the door. Here’s a practical 24-hour checklist that helps artists get better takes, faster decisions, and more value from studio time.

1) Define the session win (one sentence)

Write a single sentence that defines success for the session. Example: “Final lead vocals + doubles for the chorus” or “Track drums for 2 songs to click with clean edits.” This prevents scope creep.

2) Lock your tempo + key

Confirm BPM (or a tempo map if it changes) and the final key. Changing either mid-session burns time and energy. If you’re unsure, bring a voice note and we’ll help you find a tempo that feels natural.

3) Bring 1–2 references (with notes)

Pick references and write what you like: “dry intimate vocal,” “wide guitars,” “tight low end,” “bright but not harsh.” This speeds up production and mix decisions.

4) Rehearse the hardest 20 seconds

Recording exposes weak transitions. Identify the toughest section (often the pre-chorus into chorus) and drill it until it’s automatic.

5) Export your files correctly (if you have beats/stems)

• Export WAV (not MP3).

• Make sure every stem starts at bar 1 so it lines up.

• Label clearly: Kick, Snare, Bass, Music, FX, Lead Vox, BVs.

• Bring a rough mix so we understand your vision.

6) Vocal care (48 hours out)

Hydrate early, warm up gently, and avoid anything that inflames your voice. Bring room-temp water. If you’re doing aggressive vocals, plan breaks.

7) Gear sanity check (bands)

• Fresh strings (installed the day before so they settle).

• Spare strings/picks/sticks/batteries.

• Pedalboard power tested.

• Drummers: bring your preferred snare if you have one.

8) Decide what you’re NOT doing today

If today is tracking, don’t chase mix perfection. Capture clean performances and commit to tones that inspire you—polish comes later.
