MUSIC MIXING IN SUTTON, SOUTH LONDON

Starcity Logo.png

A great recording and production deserve a mix that brings everything together.

At Starcity Studios, we mix music for independent artists, producers, labels and creative projects, combining technical precision with musical judgement.

We don’t mix by numbers.

We listen to the song, understand what it’s trying to achieve and build the mix around the artist, production and emotion.

Bring us the track. We’ll help it sound like a record.

TURN YOUR RECORDING INTO A FINISHED RECORD.

YOUR SONG IS THERE. BUT SOMETHING IS MISSING.

Maybe you've recorded the vocals at home.

Maybe you've produced the track yourself.

Maybe you've had several people work on different parts of the song.

Maybe everything sounds good individually — but when you play the finished track, it doesn't feel cohesive.

That's where mixing comes in.

A good mix can help:

  • Make vocals clearer

  • Create space between instruments

  • Improve the relationship between vocals and production

  • Control dynamics

  • Give the track depth and width

  • Make the drums hit harder

  • Create impact and movement

  • Translate the record across different speakers and headphones

  • Bring the emotion of the performance forward

The aim isn't simply to make everything louder. It's to make everything work together.

WHAT DOES A MUSIC MIXER ACTUALLY DO?

Mixing is the stage where the individual elements of a recording are shaped into a cohesive piece of music.

Depending on the project, this can include:

VOCAL MIXING

EQ, compression, tuning, effects, automation and processing designed to make the vocal sit naturally within the record.

BALANCE

Creating the right relationship between vocals, drums, bass, instruments and other elements.

EQ & FREQUENCY MANAGEMENT

Making space for different elements so the production feels clear rather than crowded.

DYNAMICS

Using compression and other processing to control movement, punch and consistency.

SPATIAL PROCESSING

Creating depth, width and dimension using reverb, delay, stereo processing and automation.

AUTOMATION

Making important moments of the song stand out — rather than treating the entire track exactly the same.

CREATIVE EFFECTS

Using effects as part of the production where appropriate.

FINAL POLISH

Making sure the finished mix translates properly and is ready for mastering or release.

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE &
MUSICAL JUDGEMENT

A technically clean mix isn't automatically a great mix.The mixer needs to understand why something needs changing.

Should the vocal be louder? Does the chorus need more impact? Is the bass fighting the kick? Is the production too busy? Does the vocal need more space? Should we leave something imperfect because it gives the record character? These are musical decisions as much as technical ones.

At Starcity, our approach combines:

Engineering · Production · Vocal expertise · Musical judgement · Artist direction · Industry experience

That means we're not simply processing individual tracks. We're mixing the record as a piece of music.

VOCALS THAT ACTUALLY SIT IN THE RECORD

The vocal is often the most important element of the mix. Our team has extensive experience with vocal recording, vocal production and vocal mixing, allowing us to approach the vocal as part of the wider production rather than treating it as an isolated track.

We can work with:

  • Lead vocals

  • Backing vocals

  • Harmonies

  • Doubles

  • Ad-libs

  • Rap vocals

  • Sung vocals

  • Layered vocal arrangements

  • Vocal effects

Depending on the project, this can include:

Editing · Tuning · EQ · Compression · De-essing · Saturation · Reverb · Delay · Automation · Creative effects

The goal is simple: The vocal should sound like it belongs on the record.

MIXING ACROSS GENRES

We mix:

Pop · R&B · Hip-Hop · Grime · Drill · AfroBeats · Indie · Soul · House · Dance · EDM · Singer-Songwriter

We also work on:

Voiceover · Podcasting · Broadcast · Commercial Audio

Different genres need different approaches.

A grime record shouldn't be mixed like an acoustic singer-songwriter record.

A vocal-heavy R&B record needs different priorities from a dense EDM production.

The song determines the approach.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO SEND US?

For an online or remote mixing project, you can typically provide:

  • Multitrack audio

  • Stems

  • Instrumental

  • Vocal tracks

  • Reference track

  • Production notes

  • Creative references

If you're unsure how to prepare your files, we can explain exactly what we need before you send anything.

That removes a major barrier for inexperienced artists.

HOW OUR MIXING PROCESS WORKS

1. SEND US YOUR MUSIC

Tell us about the project and what you want the mix to achieve.

2. WE REVIEW THE TRACK

We'll assess the recordings, production, stems and references.

3. WE PREPARE THE SESSION

Files are organised and the mix is set up properly before creative work begins.

4. WE BUILD THE MIX

We establish balance, clarity, dynamics, space and the overall sonic direction.

5. WE REFINE

We listen critically and make the adjustments needed to get the mix where it needs to be.

6. YOU REVIEW

You'll receive the mix for review.

7. REVISIONS

Where revisions are included within your service, we'll make the agreed changes.

8. FINAL DELIVERY

You'll receive the agreed release-ready files and any additional deliverables included in your service.

NEED MORE THAN A MIX?

Sometimes the problem isn't actually the mix.

It might be the arrangement.

It might be the vocal.

It might be the production.

It might be the recording.

That's why our wider production experience matters.

If we identify something that needs addressing before the mix can reach its potential, we'll tell you.

Depending on the project, we can provide:

Additional production · Vocal production · Editing · Recording · Arrangement

You don't have to force a bad production into a good mix.

Sometimes the best mix decision happens before the mixing even starts.

MIXING AND MASTERING UNDER ONE ROOF

Once your mix is complete, we can also master the finished record.

This allows the project to move naturally from:

Production → Recording → Mixing → Mastering

without having to coordinate several different suppliers.

MUSIC MIXING FAQ

What is music mixing?

Mixing is the process of combining and processing the individual elements of a recording so they work together as a cohesive finished record.

Can you mix vocals recorded at home?

Yes. Provided the recordings are technically usable, we can mix vocals recorded outside the studio. We can even provide advice on how to best record your vocals from home.

Can you mix my own production?

Absolutely. You can send your stems or multitracks and we'll work from your existing production.

Can you fix a bad recording in the mix?

Sometimes. We can improve many recording issues, but mixing cannot completely repair every recording problem. If something needs re-recording, we'll tell you.

Do you offer vocal mixing?

Yes. Vocal mixing is one of our areas of expertise.

Can you tune my vocals?

Yes, vocal editing and tuning can be included depending on the service.

Do you mix rap and hip-hop?

Yes. We work across hip-hop, grime, drill, R&B, Afrobeats, pop and many other genres.

Do you mix remotely?

Yes. We offer online mixing, so you don't necessarily need to attend the studio.

How many revisions do I get?

This depends on the mixing service booked. We'll clarify the revision allowance before the project begins.

Can you master the song after mixing?

Yes. We can master the finished mix and provide release-ready files.

Can you make my mix sound like a reference track?

We can use reference tracks to understand the sonic direction you're looking for, while keeping the final mix appropriate to your own music.
