SET UP

1. Setting Up the Drum Kit

​

We'll start with the foundations of a good drum recording.

We'll look at how the kit is set up and why this is important when recording. While setting up a kit can be straightforward for an experienced drummer, it can be confusing for someone who is new to recording.

​

2. Setting Up Microphones

Learn how to choose and position microphones for different drums and different sounds.

​

We'll cover:

  • Different types of microphones used for recording drums

  • Microphone placement

  • Alternative microphone positions

  • How microphone placement affects the sound

  • Recording with more microphones

  • Recording with fewer microphones

  • Getting the best sound before it reaches the DAW

3. Preparing the DAW & Recording Session

We'll take you through preparing a recording session so you're ready to hit record.

You'll learn about:

  • Setting up audio channels

  • Preparing the recording session

  • Pre-recording effects and processing

  • Using equipment such as the LA-610

  • UAD effects

  • Setting up a click track

  • Preparing the session for recording

4. Line Checks & Sound Check

Before recording, we'll go through the important checks that need to happen in the studio.

We'll look at:

  • Checking every microphone and channel

  • Adjusting microphone placement

  • Checking levels

  • Drum tuning

  • Making adjustments to get the best sound possible

RECORD & MIX

5. Recording the Drums

Now it's time to record.

You'll see the complete process of putting everything we've covered into practice and capturing the drum performance.

6. Editing & Mixing the Drums

Once we've recorded the drums, we'll move into the editing and mixing stage.

We'll look at how to:

  • Edit the recorded drum tracks

  • Balance the individual drums

  • Process the drum tracks

  • Create a dynamic drum sound

  • Make the drums work together as a complete kit

  • Mix the drums into the backing track

  • Create a full audio mix
