Mixing: The 5-Minute Mix Check That Fixes Most “Something Feels Off” Problems

Most mixes don’t fail because of one big mistake—they fail because of a few small balance issues that add up. This 5-minute routine catches the most common problems before you export.
1) Turn it down
At low volume, the vocal should still be understandable and the groove should still be clear. If the hook disappears, your balance needs work.
2) Mono check (30 seconds)
If the chorus collapses in mono, your width is doing too much work or you’ve got phase issues. Fix with less extreme widening, tighter stereo FX, or better panning choices.
3) Reference for 60 seconds (level-matched)
Compare vocal level vs drums, low-end tightness, and brightness. Don’t compare louder to quieter—match levels first.
4) Vocal harshness scan
If “S” and “T” feel sharp, de-ess lightly and check 5–8 kHz. Don’t over-brighten to fake clarity—clarity often comes from arrangement and midrange balance.
5) Low-end reality check
Listen across sections: does the chorus get boomy? If yes, automate bass, tighten notes, or adjust kick/bass relationship—don’t just EQ harder.
